South Americans did not. In the 36th minute, Argentina managed to dissect the French defense across the midfield. With just two slick passes, Di Maria created the opportunity again, diving into the box with a shot over the diving French keeper Hugo Lloris. 2-0.

After the goal, Di Maria wiped away tears and turned to Argentina.

France looked isolated. Coach Didier Deschamps did the unthinkable – replacing two of his starters in the first half: Dembele (whose foul led to the first goal) and all-time French scoring leader Olivier Giroud.

At halftime, defending-champion France looked stunned. The French star, Kylian Mbappe could not show anything in the first 45 minutes of the match.

Mbappe shone as a 19-year-old at the 2018 World Cup. Comparisons were many to another teenage star soccer progeny: Pele. (In 2018, Mbappé became the first teenager to score in a World Cup final since Pele in 1958). In the 2022 tournament, Mbappe picked up where he left off.

He set another World Cup record – surpassing Pele’s record for a player under the age of 24 with his total of 12 goals. Mbappe scored eight goals in Qatar – entering the final tied with Messi for the overall goalscoring lead. But Mbappe was largely kept quiet against Argentina. Which is saying something. His first recorded shot came in the 71st minute.

Around 89,000 people inside the Lucille Stadium were overwhelming Argentina – mostly wearing the team’s trademark white and sky blue uniforms. It was electric. They cheered every touch, every pass and every shot.

But in the 80th minute, Mbappe cut Argentina’s lead to 2-1 with a penalty shot. All match long, France was silent. Calm down. uncertain But then the momentum of the game changed as France showed some life.

Then, 93 seconds later, Mbappe incredibly did it again. He leveled the scores with a right-footed shot past Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez. 2-2.

Everyone expected to see this French team in the final. Messi vs Mbappe in the end. The 35-year-old, against a 23-year-old who continues to add to his impressive football pedigree, is one of the best of all time.
